Sir, I have been addressed in correspondence variously (“Forms of Address”, letter, Jan 20). I was very happy with Victor, less so with Vick and distinctly unhappy with Vicer.

Sir, Even in the 1970s my father, a field marshal, was frequently addressed as Dear Mr Marshall (sic), and, even more intimately, as Dear Field.

Sir, My mother (maiden name Captain) served as a sergeant in a division of the British Army in India during the war. So she was Sergeant Captain. In the same division was a Captain Sergeant. There was even a rumour they had a soft spot for each other. Fortunately she married someone with a far more sensible and pronounceable
