Oxford and Cambridge have slipped down international rankings as they lose out to American universities.

Cambridge is the highest ranked British university, down one spot from last year to fourth place, in the Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings published yesterday. Oxford fell one place, from fourth to fifth.

An elite group of “superbrands” dominate the table. The top three places are taken by Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Stanford University.

There are 10 British universities in the top 100, one more than last year, despite Bristol dropping off the list.

They include Imperial College London (13), London School of Economics (24), University College London (25) and King’s College London (43).
