A British marketing executive was shot dead in the Westgate massacre in Kenya after offering himself as a hostage to bargain for the lives of 33 children. Amid panic on the roof of the Nairobi shopping centre as gunmen rampaged through a children’s cookery show being filmed there, Mitul Shah, 38, attempted to placate the killers.

His negotiations to secure the freedom of the children granted them precious seconds to escape. Some did, but others as young as 3 were killed.

Mr Shah’s actions were hailed yesterday as a “true representation of his soul” as colleagues mourned the death of the father of one who was “full of joy, full of laughter”.

Search teams continued to comb the fire-ravaged remains of the shopping centre yesterday
