Karl Köhler, the chief executive of Tata Steel in Europe, will join thousands of steel workers marching in Brussels today to demand urgent action to save the industry.

He will protest alongside workers from his company’s plants in the UK, including Port Talbot in south Wales, where hundreds of jobs are being cut. They will call on the European Commission to tackle the issue of cheap Chinese steel being “dumped” across Europe.

“The situation facing Tata Steel and other European steelmakers is perilous,” Mr Köhler said. “We are not asking for special treatment; we are asking the European Commission to stand up for fair trade and to give European steelmakers a chance to compete on a level playing field.”
