Mark Carney may remain as the governor of the Bank of England for a full eight-year term, despite pledging to serve just five. Yesterday he revealed that he had not made up his mind but would “by the end of the year”, causing consternation among MPs.

At the time of his appointment, Mr Carney said that he would not serve the full eight years but would return to Canada early for family reasons.

Andrew Tyrie, chairman of the Treasury select committee, urged the governor to make a decision. “In explaining his determination to limit his term to five years, he argued that there was ‘value in clarity’ about the period for which he would serve,” Mr Tyrie said. “He is right about clarity. The sooner
