An estimated 4,000 migrant workers in Qatar will die by the time the World Cup kicks off in 2022, human rights groups say. The death toll will amount to just over 62 per match.

The tiny, oil-rich monarchy won the bid five years ago under a cloud of bribery accusations. Qatari officials have in the past been accused of paying £3 million to secure the selection, a claim the country denies.

The International Trade Union Confederation said that more than 1,993 construction workers had died in Qatar since it won the bid, due to poor safety records, appalling standards of living and exposure to heat. That number will top 4,000 by 2022, it predicts.
