British Gas is set to cut 500 jobs as Centrica, its parent company, battles to trim costs as part of a sweeping restructuring drive.

The job losses represent the first of an estimated 6,000 cuts likely to be made by the UK’s biggest retail energy company, which supplies gas and electricity to about 11 million household and business customers.

About 360 jobs are expected to go at British Gas’s loft and cavity wall insulation business, which is set to close down. A further 90 jobs are expected to go from British Gas Business.

It is understood that the cuts include jobs in Leeds, Oxford, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Rotherham, Leicester and other locations.
