Abdoulie Jawar is planning to get married next year. Like any young groom-to-be, he has a lot to do first: saving up, finding a house for himself and his bride, and persuading his future father-in-law that he is a good prospect. Abdoulie, though, has another problem. He has to find a girl to marry. “I have two or three in mind — I’m trying to see the best one,” the 20-year-old farmer from the Gambia says. “I always come back from the farm dirty so that makes it more difficult.”

A strong, wiry man with a natty hairstyle, Abdoulie works hard growing peanuts and okra to sell.
