Oxford slips back in global league table

Oxford University has just scraped into the top ten of an influential ranking of higher education institutions.

Britain punched above its weight, experts said, but American universities dominated the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities published by Shanghai Jiao Tong University — winning eight of the top ten places.

Cambridge came fifth, the same as last year, while Oxford was tenth, one down from last year, when it was joint ninth. Harvard held its top position.

The ranking is highly regarded, particularly in the Far East, where many of Britain’s overseas students come from. Nine British universities made the top 100, with University College London at 18; Imperial College London at 23; Manchester at 41; Edinburgh at 47; King’s College London at 55; Bristol at
