Doctors are warning parents about the dangers of children getting access to liquid refills for e-cigarettes after a toddler was admitted to hospital.

The use of e-cigarettes in Scotland has trebled since 2010 but medical professionals and charities fear that parents are unaware of the potential safety threat from the liquids used in the “vaping” devices.

The toddler who swallowed the liquid nicotine was only 15 months old and was taken to hospital in Perth.

The liquid refills often come in fruit and chocolate flavours and can resemble sweets.

The warning came as MSPs called for national guidance on the risks and benefits of e-cigarettes as they backed new restrictions on their sale.

Holyrood’s health committee is already backing calls for a legally enforceable ban
