One of Britain’s biggest power stations is to close, with the loss of 240 jobs.

The planned closure of Eggborough, a coal-fired plant in North Yorkshire that produces 4 per cent of Britain’s electricity, was announced as the owner of the nearby Drax plant said that it was suing the government over George Osborne’s removal of a green tax break.

Drax has partly converted to burn wood pellets instead of coal, a move that the government refused to back for Eggborough.

The owner of Eggborough, near Selby, said that it would stop generating power next March, subject to consultations with staff and government bodies. The Unite union said that the closure would take to 1,000 the recent job losses in coal-related businesses in the region
