International anger as Egypt jails Al Jazeera journalists

Three-year prison sentences have been handed down to Al Jazeera English journalists in Egypt.

In December 2013, Egyptian security forces raided the hotel used by Al Jazeera and arrested Mohamed Fahmy, a Canadian national, Peter Greste, an Australian journalist, and Baher Mohamed, their Egyptian producer.

They were charged with being part of Mohamed Morsi’s Muslim Brotherhood, which had been declared a terrorist organisation after he was overthrown, and of airing falsified footage intended to damage national security.

Al-Jazeera and the journalists denied the allegations and said they were simply reporting the news, although Qatar, where the broadcaster is based, has been a supporter of the Brotherhood and other such groups in the region.
