Britain to build £50m Holocaust memorial

David Cameron has promised £50 million of public money to found a Holocaust memorial and educational campus after a study found “worrying” levels of ignorance about the genocide. The prime minister said that Britain stood united in its determination to face down antisemitism.

Hundreds of thousands of people attended 2,500 events around the country yesterday to mark 70 years since the liberation of the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau.

About 200 Holocaust survivors gathered in the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster to hear speakers including Mr Cameron and the Prince of Wales. The prince called the Holocaust “a warning and a lesson to all of us in all time” and urged Britain to avert future massacres in the Middle East.
