Princess Michael of Kent’s gift for making forthright remarks is so well observed in royal circles that, by her own admission, she is prohibited from speaking to the press.

Fears among courtiers about the princess attracting controversy appeared to be justified yesterday as she declared that there were no such things as animal rights.

The princess, who is married to the Queen’s cousin, told an audience at the Henley Literary Festival that despite being an animal lover she thought it was wrong to extend rights to animals.
