We must rediscover the humanity of 1945

Huge response to the wartime migrant crisis shames our modern world. Have our leaders lost their moral courage?

It’s like a Tom Lehrer song. The Hungarians blame the Greeks and the Bulgarians, the Bulgarians blame the Macedonians, the Austrians blame the Hungarians and the Germans and everyone blame the Libyans. Only the British blame the French. We would all blame the Turks but what do you say to the country that already has nearly two million refugees?

Lorries full of dead Syrians in a layby in Austria, ferries full of refugee-migrants chugging from Lesbos to Piraeus, thousands of exhausted people barrier-crashing the platforms at Budapest station, a tiny boy with his shoes on, washed up dead on a beach near Bodrum.

A few leaders seem to have worked out the scale of what is happening. Angela Merkel says that this is the biggest
