GVC Holdings faces a multimillion-dollar legal claim after a Canadian company run by a former professional ice hockey player accused it of reneging on a deal, owing to its involvement in the £1 billion auction of Bwin.party.

The Sportingbet owner, which is fighting 888 Holdings for control of Bwin, is being sued by 37 Entertainment (37E), a sports and entertainment consultancy founded by Doug Honegger, over a 50-50 joint venture to launch two websites aimed at Canadian punters.

In its petition for a “declaratory judgment” from the London Court of International Arbitration, 37E, based in Montreal, alleges the companies agreed to work together on the launch of two Sportingbet websites, one for Quebec and one for the rest of Canada.
