The renewed appeal of brutalism

Brutalism is the Marmite of architecture. Love it or hate it, though, the industrial-chic look is enjoying a revival, with contemporary developers utilising its exposed concrete and functional brass fittings. Now, though, there is a rare opportunity to buy a new home in one of the UK’s most famous brutalist buildings.

Blake Tower, a block built in 1968 on the Barbican Estate in the City of London, was once home to the YMCA and is being turned into homes. The City of London Corporation, which owns the Barbican Estate, has teamed up with the developer Redrow London and the architecture and design practice Conran and Partners to refit the tower as luxury apartments — launched to market last week.

This is only the second chance,
