Campaigners for gay marriage in Ireland have begun victory celebrations in earnest after the country resoundingly approved same-sex unions in a national referendum.

Senior figures in the “no” camp had conceded defeat long before the votes were all counted on Saturday, and in the end 1.2 million voters said “yes”.

The polling was about two to one in favour of the change, which comes 22 years after homosexuality was decriminalised.

In Waterford 47,297 people cast their ballots with 60.33 per cent in favour, the official results at Dublin Castle showed.

In Sligo North Leitrim, 53.57 per cent of the 35,842 who went to the polls supported gay marriage.

Results from the remaining 41 constituencies streamed in steadily and the official announcement was made shortly after
