Planning our lives on smartphones and using the internet as an extension of our memories is contributing to “digital amnesia”, leaving us unable to recall important information about our loved ones, a survey has suggested.

Nearly half of adults could instantly remember their home phone number from when they were 10 to 15 years old, the research found. However, seven in ten could not remember their children’s phone numbers and nearly nine in ten could not recall the numbers for their children’s schools.

More than half of people aged up to 25 said their smartphone held almost everything they needed to know, according to the report by Kaspersky Lab, a cyber-security company.

“One of the reasons consumers might be less worried about remembering information is
