A quarter of military personnel want to quit the armed forces and some want out as quickly as possible, a survey by the Ministry of Defence revealed.

The number of armed forces personnel who want to leave or who have already handed in their resignation has risen by 9 per cent since 2011, according to the survey.

The rising desire to leave comes after a period of painful cuts of tens of thousands of jobs across the military that were announced in 2010.

Morale has also been hit hard, though the latest figures showed a slight increase among officers and in particular RAF officers, albeit from low levels, over the past 12 months.
