One of Britain’s most popular beaches could become a smoke-free area in the latest curb on outdoor smoking.

Brighton city council’s health board voted yesterday to canvass public opinion on the ban, which is aimed at cutting children’s exposure to second-hand smoke, as a pro-smoking group warned against allowing the “tyranny of the majority” to dictate laws.

Brighton is thought to be the first local authority in Britain to consider prohibiting smoking on a beach, but the move comes after a wave of restrictions elsewhere in the UK and Europe. The city has already put in place a voluntary ban on smoking in its 42 parks.
