BT has marked its return to the consumer mobile market with a price war after launching a 4G package for £5 a month.
It hopes to get a foothold in the mobile market under its own steam before the completion of its £12.5 billion takeover of EE.
However, the BT Mobile launch will be subdued and marketed mostly at its existing customer base of broadband and fixed-line users who will be offered the cheapest deals.
BT is offering Sim-only contracts pitched between £5 and £25 depending on how much data is used. The company will bundle in the BT Sport app for free to new customers.
John Petter, head of BT’s consumer arm, denied that it was targeting any particular rival with its aggressive pricing.
