Space on urban streets should be reclaimed from cars and reallocated for cycling to make cities more pleasant places to live, according to Boris Johnson, who has hit back at business opposition to his cycle superhighway plans.

Some business leaders have raised concerns anonymously that the mayor of London’s £65 million proposals for two new substantially segregated cycle routes through the capital would lead to an increase in congestion.

However, Deloitte, the professional services firm, and Jones Lang LaSalle, the estate agent, will join the Euro-money publishing group, the Crown Estate and the Barts Health NHS Trust today in giving their support to the plans, which campaigners say will reduce congestion by encouraging people to use bicycles instead of cars for short commutes.
