I’m no fan of these spurious “food weeks” dreamt up by self-interested marketing boards — do we really need a national Chip Week to tell us how good deep-fried potatoes taste? But Meat Free Week, which starts on Monday, is of a different order. The British eat 84kg of meat a year, more than double the world average, which might not worry you unduly, until you realise it is largely at the expense of fruit and vegetables, of which we eat only just over half the recommended amount, 400g a day. Add to that worries about the environmental and welfare concerns of intensively reared livestock, and you can see why it’s in all our interests to eat less meat. And yet, and yet . .
