Businesses and property owners in Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Surrey and Hampshire could be forced into helping to fund London’s proposed Crossrail 2 line, the cost of which is expected to escalate to £27 billion.

If the southwest to northeast Crossrail 2 goes ahead, Londoners can expect further surcharges like those that paid for the 2012 Olympics while business rate levies on the capital’s companies would be extended.

Transport for London (TfL) is preparing funding proposals for a second underground Crossrail regional railway which will create a long-awaited Chelsea-to-Hackney line connecting to the existing national rail network.

It is argued that Crossrail 2 will transform train travel as far north as Stansted airport and Cambridge and deep into the suburbs and towns south west of London.
