The head of the CBI has urged negotiators of what could be a game-changing trade deal between Europe and the United States to get the treaty signed before a possible British referendum on European Union membership scuppers the whole idea.

On a visit to Washington yesterday, John Cridland threw his weight behind the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, known as TTIP, which aims to open up trade between the EU and the US by removing tariffs and reducing regulatory barriers. He said that it would do for the economies of both regions what supermarkets had done for consumers — provide wider choice, lower prices and out-of-season products whenever they want them.

“I want the best deal as quickly as we can get it,” he said,
