Oxford and Cambridge lead the world in a clutch of core academic subjects, a new international table shows.

Several other British universities also improve their reputations for key courses, despite alternative surveys showing them losing ground amid fierce global competition in higher education.

Oxford topped the tables in philosophy, geography, modern languages and English language and literature. Cambridge was first for mathematics, history and linguistics. Imperial College London was judged the world’s leading university for civil engineering.

Cambridge had 27 of its courses ranked in the top ten of the 30 separate subject tables, more than any other university. Oxford had 15 ranked among the ten best, Imperial had ten, the London School of Economics seven and University College London three. Edinburgh and Manchester both
