After a long day at work, the thought of going to the gym for an hour is the last thing that most people fancy. However, scientists have said that even running up an escalator or hurrying after your bus could have a positive impact on fitness and help to prevent weight gain.

Very short bursts of physical activity make a difference, as long as the exercise is intense enough, they say, claiming that only one minute of brisk activity such as brisk walking, skipping or jumping up and down is associated with weight loss of nearly half a pound in a week for women of average height.
