Liverpool have not given up hope of keeping Luis Suárez at Anfield, despite his desire to leave, and will attempt to convince the forward to stay when he returns from holiday in Uruguay.

Ian Ayre, the Liverpool managing director, concedes that Suárez has been unsettled by his own ambition but refuses to accept that the 26-year-old’s departure is inevitable.

“This is an ambitious young player,” Ayre said yesterday. “He’s talked about wanting to play in the Champions League. It’s our job to convince Luis that this is the right place to achieve those things.”

Ayre also dismissed suggestions that the position of Suárez, who continues to be targeted by Arsenal, has become untenable owing to his avowed desire to quit Liverpool.
