Everyone on Earth is actually a Martian, an American chemist has claimed. He believes life began on the Red Planet and arrived here on a meteorite.

Professor Steven Benner, of the Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution in Florida, says that chemical conditions on Mars would have been more favourable to the emergence of life.

His theory hinges on the idea that the primordial soup on Earth was missing several crucial elements necessary to convert simple chemical building blocks into polymers capable of forming complex structures and self-replicating.

The gap was plugged when a Martian meteorite hit the Earth, a concept known as panspermia.

“The evidence seems to be building that we are actually all Martians — that life started on Mars and came to Earth
