Non-judges should be recruited to sit on cases in the UK’s highest court to break the dominance of white men, the country’s most senior judges have said.

The lack of diversity in the Supreme Court, where there are 11 men and one woman, who are all white, is one of the biggest challenges it faces, Lord Neuberger of Abbotsbury said.

The president of the court said he had an “open mind” towards recruits direct from universities or from the practising Bar to the Supreme Court, which decides the most complex and difficult appeals in the country.
