2071 at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre

If you’re in any doubt that climate change is the most urgent issue of the century, I urge you to see this theatrical lecture by the scientist Chris Rapley. It is an engrossing overview of what Rapley calls “the most complex and controversial subject of all”.

Granted, the “lecture” part wins out over the “theatrical” part. Whatever the input of the director, Katie Mitchell, and the co-writer, Duncan Macmillan, Rapley’s trek through billions of years of geophysical backstory is sometimes dense enough with data to risk blinding the layperson with science.

So this 70-minute show dares to be dry. Yet I left it not only with the willies put up me but also with a rich understanding of the scientific issues. Not just the injurious
