Nick Clegg will attack the Tories for wasting millions of pounds on “vanity projects” today in a warning to his coalition partners that they will be targeted in the forthcoming council elections.

The Tories are already bracing themselves for a dire result, facing a resurgent Labour Party and a record number of candidates from UKIP. However, the Lib Dem leader will also wade in today, attacking the profligate spending of Tory councils.

Mr Clegg and Ed Miliband, the Labour leader, will start their party’s campaigns before a series of council votes across the country on May 2.

“Despite all their stated differences, a vote for Labour or the Tories will be a vote for the same thing,” Mr Clegg is expected to say in Cornwall
